Hyaluronic acid in the body
HA Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring component of the extracellular matrix. It is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) polymer consisting of repeat disaccharide units of glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine. HA polymers vary considerably in length. Variability in methods used to manufacture HA fillers has given rise to differences in properties such as degree of cross-linkage, particle size, and concentration.

Cross-linking
The cross-linked sodium HA dermal filler with butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE). Cross-linking allows the product to persist longer, so the benefits of treatment last longer. The injectable cross-linked HA dermal filler is manufactured through a process that makes the product a more homogeneous formulation, and also allows for a greater percentage of cross-linking of hyaluronic acid molecules. This property, in turn, also enhances the filler's persistence. Greater cross-linking also promotes a smoother, softer appearance.
Its hydrophilic nature causes the product to attract water molecules from within the body so that the treated area expands. After the injected hyaluronic acid diminishes, it tends to seek out even more water and, therefore, perpetuate its effects as a filler. Although allergic reactions to BDDE are rare, they have occurred in fewer than 5 percent of those treated. The signs of an allergic reaction are redness, itching, pustules, and discomfort.

Injectable dermal filler hyaluronic acid
Dermal Filler consist of long chains of hyaluronic acid. Most filler injection hyaluronic acid products will consist of HA cross-linked with a chemical and suspended in a physiological or phosphate-buffered solution. The product is then processed as a homogeneous gel or a suspension of particles in gel carriers.
The acid hialuronic filler gel is approved for injection into the mid- to the deep dermis and comes in several formulations.
